TMS 402/602 — Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures
The primary reference for masonry design and construction
The Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures includes two essential standards and their commentaries: TMS 402-16 (Building Code Requirements) and TMS 602-16 (Specification for Masonry Structures).
TMS 402 covers the design and construction of masonry structures, while TMS 602 outlines minimum construction requirements. The accompanying commentaries explain background details, committee considerations, and research used in developing the standards.

TMS 402/602-22 Review Series
During this five-part webinar series, masonry experts and Committee leaders review the new standards and changes made since the 2016 edition. These standards will form the basis for masonry design provisions in the 2024 International Building Code and other model building codes and include some major new provisions that include a new appendix on masonry partition walls reinforced with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) reinforcement, completely revised anchored and adhered veneer provisions, and enhancements throughout the standards.
This series provides an overview of changes in this edition with individual courses devoted to in-depth discussion of major structural design changes, seismic/limit states design, masonry veneer requirements, and an introduction to the new Appendix D on composite reinforcement in masonry.
What is TMS 402/602?
TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures combines two coordinated standards and their accompanying commentaries:
- TMS 402 – Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures
Establishes the design and construction provisions intended for adoption by reference in building codes. - TMS 602 – Specification for Masonry Structures
Defines the minimum construction requirements for masonry work in buildings.
Both standards are written as legal documents to support direct incorporation into building regulations. The commentaries provide background information, committee rationale, and supporting research used in developing the standards. They are advisory only and are not mandatory.
Committee Background
TMS 402/602 is developed by The Masonry Society’s TMS 402/602 Committee. The standards were previously produced under joint sponsorship by The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE through the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC). In 2013, ACI and ASCE transferred their rights to TMS, which has since served as the sole sponsor of the standards. Following this transition, the committee and standards were formally re-designated under The Masonry Society.
